Small When Far..

1–2 minutes

It’s a warm Saturday night, the city revelry is in full swing. In the distance you can hear people howling, laughing. You can smell the many drinks on people as they pass by with varying levels of composure.

Click!! A picture is made. A moment is immortalised. A waiter closing up. In the distance a taxi, as perhaps someone’s night is coming to an end. Between them two people, slumped in the street, are they taking a break, or are less pleasant consequences of a night out catching up to them. Together, a full night is on display, a story of our own chosing is woven from moments that only existed together for a fraction of a second.

An unspoken story between four walls. A moment in time paused for us to contemplate. This is what I love about photography. That it harnesses reality, but also that that same reality can mean so many different things depending on who the viewer is.

It gifts us the opportinity to ponder in silence without distraction a slither of the world that shant ever exist again.

This is what I hope to achieve with my work. I hope to nuture curiosity, give a voice to the unspoken, and if I am ever so lucky, perhaps the viewer will walk away seeing the world a little differently.

Yours Truly,

Michael Johnstone
