Markets are a special place in our communities. They are not just the place we hunt down affordable produce to keep us sustained for the next week. They are spaces that, in the midst of soulless urban sameness, giant ever amalgamating corporations – are a breath of fresh air.

our market,
our moments,
our memories.

Market Moment Zines

I distribute small, A7 size, home made zines filled with my work from the market. They are snapshots of what we’re fighting for. And a thank you from me to the communities I document.

Of course, it won’t necessarily always be this way.

Which is why, in recent times, there have been concerted and sustained community campaigns to push back against the destruction of these special places. You can read more about the success of the community campaign to save the Preston Market, as well as a separate community campaign to save the Vic Market.

In this project, I look to document these beloved spaces primarily using photography. To photograph the memorable moments, the forgettable moments, the hum of the morning meanderers, the buzz of the afternoon rush, the chaos of the close, the quiet in between, the banal and the brilliant. All of it together making a one-of-a-kind cherished community-made soup that is our market. God help anyone who tries to take them away from us.
